I recently took up cooking and thought people who criticized these knives were kitchen knife snobs. "It's a 15-piece for $25-30! What a great deal!" Or so I thought. After spending 4 hours cooking a massive meal with much of that time cutting up veggies, I decided to try out another knife. So I bought a Pure Komachi 2 Series 8" Chef's Knife, Fuchsia. $11 for one knife seemed a bit steep relative to this deal, but it wasn't too bad. So what did I think? Yikes! Potatoes that used to require some effort cut like butter. I went back to the Cook N Home chef's knife and tried sharpening it. It was still way too dull to compare. Do yourself a favor. Skip the cheap 15-piece and get 2-3 really good Pure Komachi 2 knives for the same price. I wish I did. I also recommend the Vidalia Chop Wizard to further reduce time and effort.

I had the chance to try cutting with the Mercer's chef knife at a local kitchen store. Compared to the Wüstof and Henckels knives, these Mercer knives are heftier with a bulkier hand grip. At first I did not like the bulkiness of the grip however I did like the weight difference. I would have purchased the knives locally, but the shop was unable to order this knife block set.

Now that I have been using these knives quiet a bit over the past week, it was definitely worth the purchase. I don't even notice the bulkier hand grip now (and it is only bulky by comparison to Wüstof and Henckels). It is my understanding that these knives are commonly used by culinary students and I can understand why. This is a professional product for nearly half the price of other knives in this competition range. In order to keep the blades sharp, I also purchased the Mercer Genesis Collection 10-Inch Honing Steel.

One thing to be aware of with the glass knife block is that the knives are removed by pulling straight up. Of course this is obvious, but unlike other angled knife block sets, cabinet clearance may be an issue for some kitchens. I had not thought of this when originally ordering and at first was disappointed when I thought it would not be possible to store these knives on the counter under cabinetry. However, this is a very sturdy steel and glass knife block. I soon realized the block does not slide when tipped. So whenever I need to remove or return a knife to the block I simply lean it forward without trouble.

Regarding another reviewer's issue with the staining of the bread knife: I have cut bread numerous times so far and have had no issue with staining. I have also used it to cut tomatoes. As for the other knives, I have cut chicken, strawberries, peppers, carrots, garlic, etc. with no issue. I do hand wash the knives directly after use as recommended by the manufacturer.

Overall, I am very pleased with this set.

I have a few other good knives in the kitchen. However, when I want precision and guaranteed cutting to any thinness, I choose this knife. It's weird, but because of the price and the VERY sharp edge, I feel...different...in my food preparation when I use the knife. I think, "Whoa, you lucky onion!" I'm not kidding (weird, I know). But it's so precise; I know that whatever I set out to do to my vegetables, etc., it WILL be done the way I want, and with ease. It's like doing surgery or using Photoshop and zooming way in to do professional, detailed work.

I have a dry rag nearby and I just quickly rise and wipe (since they don't recommend you put it in a dishwasher).

The 7" is great for me since I already have a heavy, 8" chef knife, a santoku, etc.

And the FIRST thing that I noticed upon picking it up was the LIGHT weight of it. Other people say the say thing. I don't miss the typical, heavy weight of most knives (that I do have). It's like a scalpel...and the sharpness, I guess, takes the place of the need for the heaviness of many other knives.

I do love it. Buy it. And it's very pretty, too (the wavy pattern of the metal as well as the wooden handle).

For home, these are way nicer than you'll find in most high end restaurants. They are very well finished, balanced, and cut through steaks with precision. If you've been to Outback Steakhouse, they are about 1/2 of the size and weight of their restaurant steak knives.

Look at the "Pro Series" of Wusthof knives for possibly the best deal in a matching, well-balanced set of cast knives. They've been the "house knives" in many restaurants and recently made available to home consumers. The handles are rubberized with safety grips. I bought nine different Pro Series knives with the classic steak knives and a 35-slot cherry Wusthof wood block. I couldn't be more pleased with the affordable combined quality. The 10 inch Wusthof ceramic "steels" work best for fine sharpening cast blades by using a 20 degree or less angle. That angle is about half or less of this large letter "V". It simply takes longer to sharpen forged blades.

The main difference in forged and cast is how long they hold an edge. It only takes 5-6 swipes on both sides to renew the factory edge to cast blades with the ceramic "steel". I figured if busy restaurant chefs can stop for a moment for a few sharpening swipes, I could live with it at home, and much better afford the bigger Wusthof set of the exact knives I preferred. The ceramic sharpener also looks and sounds cool in a home kitchen environment to guests. These are a huge improvement over most of my older Chicago Cutlery set that found a new home in my workshop. The other Chicago Cultery knives I kept in the kitchen fit very well into the Wusthof block.

I didn’t think it was possible for a product to be so easy to you. But my mind was changed when I tried the Sprializer Spiral Slicer on zucchini & made noodles out of it for dinner last night. In less than a minute (each veggie) I was able to make long strings. The prep time was awesome. Now I have to say I’ve not used a device like this before so I have nothing to compare it to. But for the price & the convenience, it’s worth having in your kitchen arsenal! The only tricky part is getting to the end of your veggie. While this gadget has a topper (with needle) to manage the ends, it only allows you to push the topper down so far. I found a fork to be more effective, but there is still a little waste. But for what it can do, a little throw away, is worth it. I highly recommend the tool. It’s small, easy to hold & grip. The clean-up was nothing more than running under water….and done! And let me also mention how pretty it makes the food presentation look on the plate ;)

Review

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) I will start by saying that I own a number of knives, some forged from local department stores, some messermeister knives that are stamped. I am not going to compare these to forged knives, so this is completely based on comparing to other stamped knives.

Let's start about weight. These are very light, as in feels a lot lighter than similarly made knives. I am not sure if this is because of the no slip kind of handles, but the lack of weight makes it feel a little strange when i am cutting. Now a sharp knife doesn't require a lot of pressure, and these were fairly sharp although I would recommend sharpening them a little more.

Staining. Now some of my knives I have had for years, and they show some scratching but very little if any staining. In fact, the only other knife I have that developed any kind of stain is one I picked up at JCPenney, and that was after a year or two of use. I don't wash my knives in the dishwasher, and i try not to keep them in water too long. Some times "helpful" family members try to do both these things; I usually catch them. Not this time. The paring knife sat in a sink of water one night and developed a rust stain almost immediately. Again, i try to be very careful with my knifes, but I've never had one stain that quickly. Absolutely don't leave them in water or use a machine, but when that happens, none of my other knives stained that quickly.

The block is just okay. I mean this would be be an okay set for say a young person in their first apartment, or someone who doesn't do a lot of cooking and wants to color coordinate their kitchen perfectly. I think there are better knife sets out there for just a little more, and they would be worth the upgrade.

Review

When browsing in the kitchen section of a department store, I was drawn to the colorful handles of some knives made by Chicago Cutlery. My first CC knife was the small yellow handled Utility Couteau Universel knife. I really like the look and feel of the synthetic material used for the handle, as it provides a great grip, even if your hands are wet. The stainless steel blade was also well suited to the task, and the knife seemed to be a very solid, and well made. No special techniques are required to sharpen the blade.

When I needed a new Santoku knife, I had no reservations about Chicago Cutlery, and I got this knife at a very good price. The 6.8" blade does a nice job of slicing meat, fish, and vegetables. And as expected, the handle provides a terrific grip, even when my hands were covered with oil and fat, when I was carving a roast. The workmanship is excellent, and I really don't have anything bad to say about this knife.

The only thing that might become an issue is the synthetic handle. Sometimes these kinds of materials get sticky or soft, as they age or are exposed to different chemicals. I don't know if that may happen, but I am hopeful that the handle will last for many, many, years. If you're like me, and like the grip you get with this knife, you will probably love its performance. Unfortunately, Chicago Cutlery has not provided a nice descriptive write-up to promote this excellent product, which is backed by a "lifetime guarantee".

Review

We received our first set of Chicago Cutlery knifes (didn't include steak knifes) 30 years ago from my husband's aunt as a wedding gift. They had wooden handles. We still have them! They're still sharp and I still prefer the paring knife over every one I've tried. In fact I even bought a second paring knife - just in case!

On a lark when I saw this set, 18 piece Insignia Steel Knife Set, on the Deal of the Day (almost two years ago) I bought it for my husband for a Christmas gift. He's gotten into cooking and I thought it would look nice setting out on the counter. I think it may have been his favorite gift and one we use constantly. The knifes stay very sharp - still haven't needed sharpening two years later! We never put any of them in the dishwasher (per manufacturer instructions) and they have never needed polishing (other than hand drying) or any other care.

Everytime we use the steak knifes with guests they are amazed at the sharpness of the blade. They don't need to be serated. They sliced through everything.

My nephew is getting married in just a few weeks and I've decided to ignore his wedding registers and buy him a set like ours. I know he and his new wife will use them for years! Somehow seems fitting to pass on the tradition.

This finger guard does the job, but requires some getting used to. It slows me down, but also keeps me from cutting my fingers, which is the whole point. But if I'm chopping slow, anyway, I don't usually cut my fingers. In time, I'll probably be able to speed up and use the guard more skillfully. It's a good alternative to the more expensive ones that look no better than this one. It's stainless steel and so won't rust. I don't find that the ring on the back is adjustable. Not without using pliers.

When I ordered this cake serving set with the hope of using it for my wedding, I loved it! When it arrived, though, I was disappointed to see that the handles are plastic, not metal like they appear in the photo. I don't know how durable they would be, and was worried that the metal blade would end up breaking apart from the plastic eventually. I also felt like the plastic handles made them feel cheap. If you're looking for cute, functional, and a good deal, it's perfect, but it's not a good option for a keepsake set, in my opinion.

The seller got them to me on time, and it was easy to return.

Great knives for the price of popular Henckels brand. Made with German steel and fabricated in China. I was surprised for the low price for this pair until I received them which is thinner than what I expected. I love this design where the blades have hollow spots which create air gaps, this make it easier to slice solid foods like cheese and hams. They do not stick as much as straight smooth steel blades. The 3-rivet hilt feels solid, smooth, and nicely detailed. Sharp.

(The word Santoku refers to a general-purpose knife that originated from Japan. It is a chef knife primarily used for dicing, slicing, and mincing; designed with the weights of the blade and the handle to be equally balanced.)

Ok let me start by letting you know that I've used a few of these before. Chicochef is definitely the best one I've used.

The main reason is when twisting the spiralizer it's not as rigid as the others, it turns a lot more smoothly. Cutting vegetables is so simple.

Then there's the essential cleaning after. It comes with a small brush which actually fits the product and works.

It is for these reasons I'd recommend this spiralizer over the others.
