I just purchased this exact set - not from Amazon - but from a small Mennonite store. I've been looking for some good - and I mean GOOD knives, and researching the Net and a number of chef magazines.



As I pulled up to the little Mennonite store - I noticed a sign stating they carried Rada Cutlery. I'd never even heard of it - but I decided to check inside. Although the prices were slightly higher than Amazon offers - I still thought they were low enough that the knives could not be of a high quality. One elderly Mennonite woman told me she owned the middle knife and that she loved it - used it to butcher her chickens. That was a little icky, but I figured if it was good enough for that, I might as well try the set - the price was right.



I am thrilled with the knives. I had to be careful with the parer - it slipped through the potato skin so easily I was taking off more of the potato than I wanted. And the middle-sized knife slipped through bacon I was slicing (in a large chunk) as easily as butter.



Now I'm going to order more Rada knives to supplement my little set.



I can't speak highly enough of these knives.

I wanted (no, I needed) a good set of sharp knives. I don't spend alot of time preparing gourmet meals, so I wasn't looking to spend a couple of hundred dollars. After seeing good reviews for these knives I ordered them and have not been disappointed. They're sharp, comfortable to handle, and food doesn't stick -- just what knives should be. I'm happy with my purchase and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

This is a sturdy and well made cutter. It's the first one I've ever owned and here's my observation: a lot of people complain that it doesn't work. Well, it works best when the angel food cake is freshly baked and cooled. Let the cake sit for a day and the outside becomes leathery tough and nothing will cut it well. You can cut your fresh cake all at once and reassemble it, or freeze any cake that won't be eaten immediately. I assume the cutter will work well on a cake with icing, but I've not tried that yet so I can't say. Anyway, this still works a lot better than a knife.

good knife set. covers all the basics of what you need from a block. I like that it does not come in a block like other knife sets, making it more unique.



the clear case is cleanable. but its more difficult than it should be. you need a screwdriver to partially disassemble the case. I was hoping for something that clicked out/off and back.



also, the knife holders are not separate, so you should be careful not to touch/dull your knifes when removing or replacing them. I haven't owned it long enough to see if the case gets all scratched up. the base also its quite heavy enough. something that holds knifes should be a little more sturdy. perhaps that's why everyone uses the block... oh well



but the knives themselves are great. love the weight, feel, and they cut well. I just think its only a matter of time before I get a block and move them over

First we were charmed by these knives. Very colorful and sharp. But after two weeks of pretty moderate use we've got rusty chipped blades. It says Titanium and stainless steel, anodized , I don't believe it is either one.

I have posted pictures of those rusty blades, so you can go check out yourself.

We're returning these. Huge disappointment.

This little palm rest finger protector is little more than a plastic thingamajig. The finger protector is a wobbly, awkward item, making quick cuts along the protective side awkward. Indeed, for the novice chef, or, if the classification exists, the sub-novice chef it may be an aid if slicing at a slow to moderate pace. Possibly to learn how to gradually move along the food item. This gadget is, however, hardly useful for a hobby cook. It is too clumsy, unsteady, and even slightly bothersome. At the offered price ($0.84 - 02.25.2014), give it a try, but be patient until it arrives (from China.) Wouldn't suggest paying more than a $1.00!

Instead, when you order the classic knives you get the identical ones with the stainless steel handles... If these are the first Shun knives you're ordering... no biggie... but if you're trying to complete a collection just be aware that they won't contact you before shipping the wrong knives so you'll have to deal with the return process if you want to fix it.

Received these for a Christmas gift. I use Henckel Profi S at home, and was looking for a cheaper set to stash in my locker at the fire station. Using German Henckels, my standards are pretty high, and I have to say that these inexpensive knives were a pleasant surprise! They have good balance, and are most definitely ice-hardened stainless, same process as Henckels uses. Tradeoff with stainless is that you can't get quite as sharp of an edge, i.e. you probably couldn't shave with them, but they are well beyond adequate for most kitchen tasks. If you need razor sharp (sushi, filet knife, etc.), you will probably want something other than these for a couple of reasons. They come with a great edge right out of the box, but this stainless doesn't hold up quite as well as other stainless knives I've used. I have been surprised to see that the faces of the blades have scratched all over from handwashing with a green scrubby on one side of a sponge--I would never expect hard stainless to do that. I don't care about that cosmetically, but that just tells me that the steel is a bit softer, and I definitely have to hone and/or sharpen before preparation of each meal. I have definitely been spoiled by the abuse that Henckels will take before needing honing!



The downside in my opinion is the case. The knife pockets are created by sewing a piece of flat nylon stock to a flat backing, which leaves the threads fully exposed to the edges of the knives (there is no permanent insert in the sleeves). The knives come in thin plastic sleeves, and with a plastic cover on the tips, but these will probably be quickly lost or cut through. Replacing the plastic covers on the tips is not a good idea anyway, much like re-capping a needle. In any case, I have used the plastic sleeves every time, yet the stitching has come out of the case to the point where it no longer holds the knives (after two weeks' use). The knives also have a velcro tab around the handle, which I find to be a hassle--a well-designed case won't need this and it's one more thing to mess with when your hands are covered in food. If you use this case, I'd suggest getting some edge covers that are more substantial and designed to last.



I am returning my defective set, but will likely order another of this product in hopes the case defect on my case was an isolated incident. The quality of the knives is worth the hassles of the case. Alternately, I may buy a better case and keep just the knives--at $48, the knives are a steal even without the case!



For another excellent budget knife brand, look at Forstner by Victorinox. They are a stamped blade (not forged), but their 9-inch filet and 14-inch slicer (with granton edge) are the finest function I've used at any price.

I didn’t think it was possible for a product to be so easy to you. But my mind was changed when I tried the Sprializer Spiral Slicer on zucchini & made noodles out of it for dinner last night. In less than a minute (each veggie) I was able to make long strings. The prep time was awesome. Now I have to say I’ve not used a device like this before so I have nothing to compare it to. But for the price & the convenience, it’s worth having in your kitchen arsenal! The only tricky part is getting to the end of your veggie. While this gadget has a topper (with needle) to manage the ends, it only allows you to push the topper down so far. I found a fork to be more effective, but there is still a little waste. But for what it can do, a little throw away, is worth it. I highly recommend the tool. It’s small, easy to hold & grip. The clean-up was nothing more than running under water….and done! And let me also mention how pretty it makes the food presentation look on the plate ;)

This is a well-balanced, serrated, steak knife with a wooden handle. It is quite substantial - meaning very heavy. The wooden handles are not sealed so I would suggest washing these by hand and oiling the handles until they season. They slice well and are perfect for the larger cuts of meat. I think these knives were heavier than I anticipated but in terms of length, in line with other steak knives on the market. They are definitely worth what was charged. I am giving them 4 stars because they are a bit on the too heavy side, but that is really my taste. This is where on-line shopping is a disadvantage as I have never seen these knives anywhere else so there was no way of knowing how they felt in hand.

I bought these for my wedding. They are very well made and sturdy. They can fit a fancy occasion or a informal one. I like that they don't look like cheap metal or plastic cutters you see everywhere else. My only grip is that they tarnished easily. We didn't clean the set for four hours after we cut the cake, and there was a tarnish spot. I haven't used tarnish remover yet on it because it is so small. But even if it doesn't come off, its still something I like enough to keep. Also when I bought this from amazon, there is no engraving option just FYI.
